Government Of Haiti Summons US Official To Explain Trump’s Racist ‘Shithole’ Remark

The government of Haiti has formally summoned a US government official to explain President Trump’s remark referring to Haiti and some African nations as “shithole” nations in an Oval Office meeting with lawmakers on immigration solutions, according to several people briefed on the conversations.

Haiti Ambassador Paul Altidor told NBC News political contributor Yamiche Alcindor that the president’s remarks were “based on stereotypes” and the president was either “misinformed” or “miseducated.”

Ambassador Altidor also said he had formally requested that a U.S. official explain the remarks to Haitian government officials, Alcindor tweeted.

“Haitians fought along U.S. soldiers in the Revolutionary War and we continue to be great contributors to American society,” said Altidor.

“Why do we need more Haitians?” Trump said as he grew frustrated with lawmakers who floated restoring protections for immigrations from Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as part of an immigration agreement. “Take them out.”

The White House did not deny Trump’s remarks in a statement to reporters.

“Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people,” a White House spokesman said when asked to comment on the Post story.
