GOP Rep. Don Young (Alaska) suggested to attendees at a meeting on school safety that Jews could have survived the Holocaust and avoided “the ovens” if they had been armed.
“How many millions of people were shot and killed because they were unarmed? Fifty million in Russia,” Young said while speaking at a conference in Juneau, according to Alaska Public Media.
“How many Jews were put in the ovens because they were unarmed?” he asked.
The politician added: “My goal is to keep everybody that wishes to carry arms – that are legal – has the right to do so.”
However, halfway through his sentence, Young was interrupted by a representative from Anchorage, Alaska, who shouted: “What are you doing? What are you doing?”
The Mirror adds:
Another male member told Young to “shut up”, but Young told the Anchorage representative to “vote against him” if he did not like what he was hearing.
Asking the representative how many murders had occurred in his constituency, to which the answer was ‘a lot’, Mr Young then told him to “drop the subject”.
Young was reportedly responding to a question about school safety.
