Rep. Tom Garrett (R-Va.), a member of the Republican House Freedom Caucus, reportedly tried to calm his told constituents down during a town hall event by telling them that “as frightening as” Trump might be, he’s “small potatoes compared to Nazi Germany.”
“America has overcome amazing challenges that Donald Trump, as frightening as he is to some people, small potatoes compared to Nazi Germany,” Garrett told a town hall crowd while visiting EastLake Community Church in southwest Virginia, according to Politico.
The comparison drew immediate jeers from a crowd packed with critics of the administration, prompting Garrett to respond, “So he’s worse?”
“This great nation will continue to move forward by virtue of the collective of American people,” he said, adding that some conservatives once also feared about the future of the country under the presidency of Barack Obama.
Garrett, who took the stage just moments after news broke that Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, also sidestepped questions about whether a special prosecutor should be named to investigate potential collusion between Trump campaign associates and Russia last year. Garrett said he hasn’t personally seen any evidence that Trump or his associates colluded with Russia.
“If I see a Trump who I think has betrayed his duty to the Constitution, he needs to go,” he said.
