From Golf Club, Trump Attacks Puerto Rico Mayor For ‘Poor Leadership’ After Begging His Admin For Help

President Trump on Saturday attacked San Juan, Puerto Rico mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz in a series of early-morning tweets, accusing her of being “nasty” to him and attacking her “poor leadership ability” a day after Cruz begged his administration for more help “to save us from dying.”

“The mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump,” Trump tweeted from his golf club in Bedminster, N.J. “Such poor leadership ability by the mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help.”

“They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort,” he continued. “10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job.”

Moments after President Trump again congratulated himself for his handling of the federal response to Hurricane Maria’s devastation in Puerto Rico, the mayor of Puerto Rico’s capital city San Juan held a live press conference on Friday to beg “anyone that can hear us to save us from dying.”

“The world will see how we are treated — not as second-class citizens, but as animals that can be disposed of,” said Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz.

“Enough is enough,” said Cruz.

“I am going to do what I never thought I would do. I am begging, begging anyone who can hear us to save us from dying,” she said. “We are dying and you are killing us with the inefficiency.”

Cruz fired back at Trump’s tweets attacking her, saying her number one goal is “saving lives.”

“Actually, I was asking for help. I wasn’t saying anything nasty about the president,” Cruz said on MSNBC following the tweets. “It’s not about politics, it’s not about petty comments, it’s about moving forward, putting boots on the ground and saving lives.”

The Trump administration placed Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan in charge of the military relief operations Thursday, but even he acknowledged on Friday that the Defense Department has not sent enough troops and vehicles to the island.

Democratic lawmakers also slammed Trump’s tweets attacking the mayor.

“Is your ego so fragile & your heart so cold that you’d attack a leader in the midst of a humanitarian crisis because she needs your help?” Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.) tweeted at Trump on Saturday.

“You watch TV & tweet insults at their leaders from your golf club,” Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) tweeted.

President Trump on Thursday praised his administration’s relief efforts in Puerto Rico, telling reporters that his team is doing an “incredibly good job” despite having “nothing to work with.”

“We have done an incredible job, considering there’s absolutely nothing to work with,” Trump told reporters on the White House lawn.

“And a very big question is, what are we going to do with the power plant? Because the power plant is totally wiped out,” he said. “There is nothing. The power grid is gone.”
