President Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani admitted on Sunday that Trump lied to reporters and the American people because he was “not under oath.”
Giuliani, speaking to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on Sunday, acknowledged that the president’s false account of payments made to two women who say they had sexual relationships with the president had changed several times during the investigation. He blamed attributed the lies to lapses in Trump’s memory,
In one exchange, Giuliani begins by bashing former Trump lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, who is now a cooperating witness in the probe, as a liar because he has changed his story several times. When Stephanopoulos notes that Trump has also changed his story, Giuliani argued that it was fine for Trump to do that because he was not under oath.
GIULIANI: “And the Southern District says you can get out of jail if you do this, you’ve got three years now. There’s a real motivation to sing like crazy. He’s got to do a lot of singing to get out of the three years and he will say whatever he has to say. He’s changed his story four or five times.”
STEPHANOPOULOS: “So has the President.”
GIULIANI: “The President’s not under oath. And the President tried to do the best he can to remember what happened back at a time when he was the busiest man in the world.”
GIULIANI: "[Cohen] will say whatever he has to say. He has changed his story 4 or 5 times."
ABC: "So has the president."
