French Parliament Votes To Ban All Fracking, Oil Production In The Country

French parliamentarians on Tuesday passed a law banning all fossil fuel production, including fracking and oil drilling, in all of its territories by 2040.

No new permits will be granted to extract fossil fuels and no existing licences will be renewed beyond 2040.

The vote is seen as a largely symbolic gesture as the country is 99% dependent on hydrocarbon imports. Socialist lawmaker Delphine Batho said she hoped the ban would be “contagious”, inspiring bigger producers to follow suit.

French President Emmanuel Macron celebrated the vote in a Tweet Tuesday: “Very proud that France has become the first country in the world today to ban any new oil exploration licences with immediate effect and all oil extraction by 2040. #KeepItInTheGround #MakeOurPlanetGreatAgain”.

France is also preparing to end the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040 as a way of reaching its emissions targets under the Paris climate agreement.
