Fox Host Confronts Conway: Why Was It OK For GOP To Hold Closed-Door Hearings But Not Dems?

Fox News’s Chris Wallace pressed Counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway on Sunday about whether the White House would cooperate with the House’s impeachment inquiry following a vote to formalize the process.

“The full House did not vote to authorize an impeachment inquiry. Just Democrats did,” Conway said on “Fox News Sunday” before Wallace reminded her that Democrats hold the majority in the chamber.

Independent Rep. Justin Amash (Mich.) also voted to authorize the Hose inquiry.

Wallace asked Conway on whether the White House would cooperate with the process which Democrats promised would include public hearings.

Conway fired back by pointing out that several current and former White House officials have already testified, but Wallace noted that those officials testified over the objections of the White House.

“We’ve seen different people going up there and testifying. … What we haven’t seen is the fullness of the eight or 10 hours each of them has spent testifying,” Conway said.

Conway then hit House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on the handling of information from the closed hearings.

“I guess Adam Schiff’s growing mushrooms in the dark in his secret process, which is unfortunate because you cannot put that toothpaste back in the tube,” she added.

“When the Republicans had control of the House in 2017 and ‘18, they conducted the investigation about Russia and interference in 2016 behind closed door,” Wallace noted. “When Republicans did the Benghazi investigation, they conducted it behind closed doors.

He ran a clip of then-House Intelligence Committee chairman Trey Gowdy touting the benefits of conducting closed-door process with no cameras, before asking: “So why is it okay for Republicans … to conduct hearings, depositions, interviews behind closed doors but it’s unacceptable for Democrats?”

“Respectfully, Chris, this is about impeaching a president of United States,” Conway said, as she began to explain the obvious.

“Benghazi was about four Americans who died,” the Fox News host countered.
