Former GOP And Senate Staffer Arrested On Child Porn Charges

A former digital strategist for the Senate Republican Conference, who also worked for pro-life groups and designed social media ads for Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, was arrested in Washington on Friday on federal child pornography charges, reports The Washington Post.

Ruben Verastigui, 27, is accused of receiving and possessing child pornography between last April and this month, according to a criminal complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Verastigui, who posted a photo of himself at the White House just two months ago, was arrested Friday evening at his apartment in Northeast Washington, where police executed a search warrant.

Investigators said they found “several files of child pornography” on his cellphone, along with a chat conversation in which he allegedly discussed exchanging the files and videos. Verastigui allegedly admitted to investigators that he had received some of the files, according to the complaint.

At the time of his arrest, Verastigui was employed by the nonprofit Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions in the communications department.

“The details of the allegations against Mr. Verastigui are tragic and shocking,” the nonprofit said in a statement to The Post. “He is no longer employed by the organization and we are prepared to fully cooperate with law enforcement requests in this matter to any extent needed.”

Prior to joining the nonprofit in July, Verastigui, who has been involved in pro-life groups, worked for two years for the U.S. Senate, including a year and a half as a senior digital strategist for the Senate Republican Committee, and nine months as digital director of the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, according to his LinkedIn profile.
