In a heated exchange with a black supporter of Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum, Florida Republican congressman Matt Gaetz was caught on camera using a racist dog whistle while accusing the man of supporting voter fraud.
“You don’t get to go in and monkey with ballots,” Gaetz said on Saturday to a black Gillum supporter, according to CNN political contributor Joan Walsh.

“Racist, and also wrong about the process,” Walsh wrote on Twitter.

Representative Ron DeSantis, the Republican nominee for governor in Florida, drew accusations of using a similar racist dog whistle in August after saying in a television interview that voters should not “monkey this up” by electing his opponent, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who would be the state’s first black governor.
On Friday evening, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow played video of Gaetz arguing with a female election official as she attempted to speak with lawyers.
“Matt Gaetz showed up to cool the passions of the crowd urge restraint and respect—yeah right or to yell at police officers and election officials,” Maddow said.
“That’s not a safety hazard,” Gaetz yelled at a police officer after demanding to be let in to perform an inspection of the building. “The safety hazard is there in the [unintelligible] ballots!”
