Federal Court Orders North Carolina To Redraw ‘Unconstitutional’ Congressional District Maps

A federal court has ordered North Carolina’s GOP-controlled state legislature to once again redraw the state’s congressional district map that was previously redrawn by Republican lawmakers.

A three-judge panel ruled that state Republicans drew excessively partisan districts that were found to have discriminated against African American voters.

“Having concluded that the 2016 Plan violates the Equal Protection Clause, the First Amendment and Article I of the Constitution, we now must determine the appropriate remedy,” the court wrote in its nearly 200-page opinion.

The court has ordered the state to ensure that no further elections are conducted under the 2016 map and has ordered the legislature to redraw the congressional maps before the 2018 midterm elections.
