Fact-Checking Website PolitiFact Crashed Briefly During Trump’s Lie-Filled State Of The Union Address

PolitiFact’s website, which rated nearly 70 percent of President Trump’s statements as either “Mostly False,” “False” or “Pants on Fire,” went down briefly during Trump’s first State of the Union address.

About halfway through Trump’s speech, the fact-checking site tweeted that their website had temporarily crashed due to heavy traffic.

“Welp … our website just crashed,” PolitiFact tweeted. “Thanks for reading ?!!? We’ll keep things up here on Twitter while we see what happened.”

The outage lasted about five minutes, according to a subsequent tweet from the website’s official account.

PolitiFact rated Trump’s claim that the U.S. visa lottery “randomly hands out green cards without any regard for skill, merit, or the safety of our people” as a “FALSE” statement.

PolitiFact also rated Trump’s claim that his recent tax bill was the “biggest ever” as “False.”

The site had fact-checked nearly 500 of Trump’s statements before the State of the Union, rating 21 percent as “mostly false,” 33 percent as “false” and 15 percent as “pants on fire.”
