Former South Carolina police officer Michael Slager has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the deadly shooting of an unarmed black man.
A federal judge ruled on Thursday that Slager had committed second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Walter Scott during a routine traffic stop in April 2015. Slager shot Scott in the back as he ran away.
Slage was also found to have obstructed justice with his statements to state police following the shooting, ABC News reported.
A video of Slager shooting Scott five times in the back went viral in 2015, causing public outrage and sparking a national debate about how police use deadly force.
Slager has argued that he shot Scott in the back in self-defense.
