Dem Senators Denied Entry To Immigration Detention Facility Where Children Are Being Held, Police Called

Sen. Robert Menendez became the second Democratic senator to say he was barred from entering an immigration detention center, where he wanted to tour the facility where officials are separating families that came across the border illegally.

“This is outrageous. Sec. Nielsen owes us answers,” Menendez tweeted, referring to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Menendez also included a link to Sen. Jeff Merkley’s (D-Ore.) tweet from a day earlier saying he was barred from entering a detention center in Texas.

“My team was also barred from touring a migrant processing facility where families are being separated,” the senator added. “When the elected representatives of the people can’t observe how our government is operating, we’re in an upside down world.”

Merkley on Sunday live streamed his attempt to enter an immigrant detention center in Texas which he said was housing immigrant children.

In the video, the senator can be seen introducing himself to guards outside the detention building and asking for permission to enter.

“I was barred entry. Asked repeatedly to speak to a supervisor—he finally came out and said he can’t tell us anything. Police were called on us,” Merkley said in a tweet.

The incident comes amid growing outrage at the Trump administration’s enforcement of a policy that separates undocumented children and parents, including those seeking asylum.
