Conservative provocateur Ann Coulter ripped into President Trump shortly after he declared a national emergency at the southern border to speed up the construction of his long-promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
During an appearance on Los Angeles-based radio station KABC on Friday, Coulter called out the president’s poor character, saying that the only reason many conservatives could stomach voting for him was his repeated promises to get a border wall built.
In contrast with Trump, Coulter said former President Ronald Reagan was “a competent man whom we trust to run the government” and “a decent person” who deserved the title of commander-in-chief.
“None of that was true with Trump!” she added.
Coulter said signing the congressional bill is a mistake that would ensure no wall would be built: “not a wall, not a prototype, but some bollard fencing with the approval of local officials.”
She suggested the president is actually “hoping” the national emergency declaration will just be blocked by the courts “because for some reason, he really doesn’t want to build the wall.”
“Forget the fact that he’s digging his own grave,” she said. “The only national emergency is that our president is an idiot.”

On Twitter, Coulter said Trump was only declaring a national emergency to pose for his voters who still believe in him. “The goal is to get Trump’s stupidest voters to say ‘HE’S FIGHTING!’ No he’s not. If he signs this bill, it’s over,” she tweeted early Friday morning.
Trump had mentioned Coulter in his Friday speech, saying he “hardly know[s] her,” and hasn’t “spoken to her in way over a year.”
In response to Trump, Coulter tweeted, “THANK YOU, Mr. President for admitting that your total capitulation on campaign promises has nothing to do with me.”
Coulter said she was going to change the title on the paperback version of her book “In Trump We Trust” to “In Trump We Trusted.”
“This is the worst open borders the country has ever had under the president who ran against open borders,” she added.
She also told KABC that she is “going to spend the rest of my columns denouncing the president, for the rest of my life.”
