Hillary Clinton trolled President Trump over revelations he pressured the leader of Ukraine to investigate a Democratic political opponent, joking that she “never” had to tell former President Obama not to withhold aid from allies in order to secure damaging information on political opponents.
Clinton was responding to reports Monday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was listening in on the call between President Trump and the Ukrainian president at the center of the impeachment inquiry launched by House Democrats.
“How many times when you were secretary of State did you have to tell Barack Obama, you can’t extort foreign countries to get dirt on political enemies?” Late Show host Stephen Colbert asked Clinton.
“Yeah, that never happened,” Clinton responded. “No.”
Colbert then asked Clinton what the role of secretary of State should be in those situations.
“The secretary of State’s job is to know what the president is going to say on these calls,” said Clinton, painting a picture of a coordinated effort and shared talking points put together before president ever calls a foreign leader.
“Because you’ve got a president who doesn’t listen to anybody or doesn’t follow instructions whatsoever, I’m not sure if [they haven’t] given up on trying to give him any sort of preparation,” she added.
