Bush Speechwriter Warns: Trump’s CNN Tweets Are A ‘Direct Attack’ On The Safety Of Journalists

A former speechwriter for President George W. Bush is warning that President Trump’s repeated attacks on CNN and other news networks are jeopardizing the freedom and safety of US-affiliated journalists, who “depend on the protection of the US government.”

“Inside the US, CNN’s reporting is protected by the First Amendment and the courts,” tweeted David Frum, who currently works as a senior editor at The Atlantic. “Outside the US, US-affiliated journalists do ultimately depend on the protection of the US government. Trump’s words are a direct attack on those international journalists’ freedom & even safety.”

Though attacked the news network’s international news arm in a tweet Saturday: “Outside of the U.S., CNN International is still a major source of (Fake) news, and they represent our Nation to the WORLD very poorly.”

CNN reporters condemned Trump’s latest attack, telling the president that their colleagues “risk their lives” covering famines, war and politics worldwide.

CNN’s public relations team also responded to Trumps’ tweet, reminding the president that it’s his job, not CNN’s, to “represent the U.S. to the world.”
