U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson traveled to Baltimore on Wednesday to defend President Donald Trump as he continued to rail against the city as a “disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess.”
But when Carson, who worked as a surgeon at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Hospital for 36 years, attempted to hold a press conference Wednesday morning to discuss opportunity zones and federal programs that might help revitalize the city’s poorest communities, a church kicked him off of their property, reports CBS Baltimore.
“It’s a church — they say, ‘Get off of our property!’” Carson complained about getting the boot. “I mean, a church! When we’re talking about helping people! This is just the level to which we have sunk!”
But Gregory Evans, a member of the Morning Star Church, told the local station that Carson never told the church beforehand of his plans to use its property.
Carson eventually gave his speech at another location, where he compared the city to a patient with cancer.
“When we’re talking about helping people,” he said. “This is the level we have sunken to in society.”
He said you can dress a cancer patient up, but that “cancer is going to have a devastating effect.”
“You’re going to have to address that issue if you’re ever going to solve it,” he added.
“The federal government has invested a lot of money into Baltimore and will continue to do so,” he said. “But you can see from looking around, there are problems here in Baltimore.”
