Australian Lawmaker Proposes To Partner During Same-Sex Marriage Debate

Weeks after Australians voted in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage in a referendum, a member of parliament proposed to his longtime boyfriend as Australia’s House of Representatives met to debate a same-sex marriage bill on Monday.

Tim Wilson, a member of the Liberal party and Australia’s lower house of parliament, fought back tears as he proposed to his partner, Ryan Bolger, who was sitting in the public gallery.

“This debate has been the soundtrack to our relationship,” Wilson said.

“So there’s only one thing left to do,” Wilson said. “Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?”

Bolger nodded yes as the chamber burst into cheers and applause.

Though same-sex marriage has been illegal in Australia, the couple has been wearing engagement rings for seven years.

“I should let Hansard note to record that that was a ’yes’—a resounding yes,” Deputy Speaker Rob Mitchell said. “Congratulations.”
