Auschwitz Museum Condemns Viral Prom Photo Of High School Students’ Nazi Salute; Police Investigating

The official Auschwitz Memorial Twitter account has issued a statement expressing dismay at a viral photo of a group of Wisconsin high school students with their arms extended in the air appearing to give the “Sieg Heil” Nazi salute.

“It is so hard to find words,” the group wrote on Monday. “This is why every single day we work hard to educate. We need to explain what is the danger of hateful ideology rising. Auschwitz with its gas chambers was at the very end of the long process of normalizing and accommodating hatred.”

The Baraboo School District confirmed in a tweet that they have opened an investigation and “will pursue any and all available and appropriate actions, including legal, to address.”

“The photo of students posted to #barabooproud is not reflective of the educational values and beliefs of the school district of Baraboo,” the district added in a tweet Monday.

The photo post, which has since been deleted, was tweeted Sunday night around 9 p.m. and included the caption, “We even go the black kid to throw it up #barabooproud.”

The photo appears to show about 50 boys from the Baraboo High School Class of 2019 posing on the Sauk County Courthouse steps. Taken before their prom, not all students appear to be taking part in what appears to be an anti-semitic salute.

The Baraboo Police Department said officers are assisting with the school district’s investigation into the “controversial photo.”

Vice News contributor Jules Suzdaltsev, shared a statement from one of the few boys who did not extend their arms in the photo.

My name is Joran Blue, I am the boy captured in the photo to the far right. The photo was taken during our Junior Prom Photos. I clearly am uncomfortable, with what was happening. I couldn’t leave the photo as it was taken within 5 seconds. The photographer took the photos telling us to make the sign, I knew what my morals were and it was not to salute something I firmly didn’t believe in. I attend BHS, these classmates have bullied me since entering middle school, I have struggled with it my entire life and nothing has changed. These are the boys of Class of 2019, nothing has been done and my question is.. Will anything ever be done. I truly & firmly believe we need to make a change to this horrible act, it needs to stop. Bullying. Immaturity. and just takings things as a “joke”…

The Baraboo School District issued the following letter to parents on Monday morning:

Several students have shared anonymous accounts of widespread bullying and harassment of minority students ignored by school officials:
