Atlanta Students Take A Knee After Being Banned From Joining National Walkout To Protest Gun Violence

Hundreds of students at an Atlanta high school took a knee during the national school walkout to protest gun violence after being threatened with “severe punishment” by school officials if they participated in the walkout.

Administrators at Booker T. Washington High School threatened to punish students participating in a nationwide student walkout on Wednesday, exactly one month since a gunman killed 17 people and injured 14 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Students were reportedly allowed to conduct an ordered, silent demonstration, according to tweets posted by Guardian reporter Jamiles Lartey.

Lartey reports that as many as 100 students participated on each floor of the school in the protest. The school was also put on lockdown to prevent students from leaving.
