As Death Toll Soars, Trump Claims Media Wants Country Closed To Hurt His Reelection Chances

President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to accuse the media of wanting to keep the country closed so that it will hurt his “election success.”

About an hour before his daily coronavirus press briefing, Trump claimed: “real people want to get back to work ASAP.”

“The LameStream Media is the dominant force in trying to get me to keep our Country closed as long as possible in the hope that it will be detrimental to my election success,” Trump tweeted.

“The real people want to get back to work ASAP,” he added. “We will be stronger than ever before!”

Trump told Fox News on Tuesday that he wants the U.S. economy to “open” back up by Easter Sunday (April 12), a date that few health experts believe will be sufficient time to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Speaking during a Fox News “virtual town hall” on Tuesday, Trump reiterated he was eager to see the nation return to normal soon, even as doctors warn the nation will see a massive spike in cases if Americans return to crowded workplaces or events.

“I give it two weeks,” Trump said, suggesting he was ready to phase out his 15-day self-isolating federal guidelines when they expire. “I guess by Monday or Tuesday, it’s about two weeks. We will assess at that time and give it more time if we need a little more time. We have to open this country up.”

Trump’s tweet comes as the US coronavirus death toll neared 900 and confirmed cases passed 61,000.
