AP: US Fires 59 Tomahawk Missiles At Syrian Air Base In Retaliation For Chemical Weapons Massacre

The United States launched a barrage of tomahawk cruise missiles into Syria Thursday night at a Syrian airfield in retaliation for this week’s horrific chemical weapons attack that killed at least 100 civilians, U.S. military officials told NBC News.

Two U.S. warships in the Mediterranean Sea fired 59 Tomahawk missiles intended for a single target — Ash Sha’irat in Homs province in western Syria, the officials said. That’s the airfield from which the United States believes the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fired the banned weapons.

There was no immediate word on casualties. U.S. officials told NBC News that people were not targeted and that aircraft and infrastructure at the site, including the runway, were hit.

As the AP notes, the surprise U.S. assault is a stunning reversal for Donald Trump, who warned as a candidate against the U.S. getting pulled into the Syrian civil war, which has dragged on into in its seventh year.

On Wednesday, Trump said that the video of children suffering from the chemical attack has “changed very much” his view of Syria and Assad.

“I think what happened in Syria is one of the truly egregious crimes and shouldn’t have happened and it shouldn’t be allowed to happen,” Trump told reporters traveling on Air Force One to Florida on Thursday.

Here’s the advice Donald Trump the reality TV star and prolific tweeter had for Obama about going into Syria in 2013.
