Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro on Wednesday after he claimed on his latest podcast that if poor people have to “work more than one job to have a roof over your head or food on the table, you probably shouldn’t have taken the job that’s not paying you enough. That’d be a ‘you’ problem.”
Shapiro cited a 2013 U.S. Census Bureau report titled “About 13M U.S. Workers Have More Than One Job,” which found that “8.3% of workers had more than one job — and most held both jobs for the entire year.”
Rep. Ocasio Cortez responded to Shapiro’s controversial remarks, tweeting: “One of the most manipulative tactics plutocrats use is convincing people that the systemic issues we face are due to character flaws instead of policy flaws.”
“Working people aren’t dumb or inferior; nor are they why insulin costs $300 or huge co’s pay starvation wages. Corruption is,” she added.

Twitter users were quick to tear Shapiro apart:
Yeah, Ben Shapiro, why should one bother working as a public school teacher or at a nonprofit if they need a 2nd job since giving back to communities isn't lucrative? Or imagine being born into poverty & having to care not just for oneself but a child.
Let's opt for compassion. https://t.co/hfPOWxyzNN

When I am president, I will fix poverty by having Ben Shapiro personally phone up every SNAP recipient and suggest that she try getting a higher-paying job.

to be fair, this argument did make more sense right up until the year Ben Shapiro started kindergarten pic.twitter.com/A0ryklQihj

Yep, that’s right. Lots of people taking a pass on well-paid jobs with good hours because their heart’s desire is for working overtime for crap pay. Ben Shapiro is a true student of human nature, this one. https://t.co/DmnBKFhQVZ

Would love to see Ben say this to a working person's face rather than on his little video show funded by Texas fracking billionaires https://t.co/poY2oNzSaM

Ben Shapiro comes out against people trying to make ends meet to feed their families. https://t.co/YL6pIkkFZx

Ben Shapiro would be in tears halfway through a single shift at literally any retail job https://t.co/3azvdZUz1A
