Ambien Maker Fires Back At Roseanne’s Sleep Drug Defense: ‘Racism Is Not A Known Side Effect’

Sanofi US, the pharmaceutical company that makes the sleep aid Ambien, fired back at Roseanne Barr for blaming her racist tweet on taking the prescription drug.

In a since-deleted tweet earlier Wednesday, Barr wrote: “Guys I did something unforgiveable so do not defend me. It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting-it was memorial day too-i went 2 far & do not want it defended-it was egregious Indefensible. I made a mistake I wish I hadn’t but…don’t defend it please. ty.”

Sanofi US fired back: “People of all races, religions and nationalities work at Sanofi every day to improve the lives of people around the world. While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.”

In a now-deleted tweet from Tuesday, Barr wrote that former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, who is black, is the combination of “Planet of the Apes” and the “Muslim Brotherhood.” As a result, ABC canceled her sitcom reboot after just one season.

ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey called her racist tirade “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values,” when announcing the cancellation of her sitcom reboot on Tuesday.

Barr, 65, later tweeted that her mention of taking Ambien was “an explanation” and “not an excuse.”
